Document Scanners - Which one??

Document scanners have features that vary greatly. Determine what your needs are. Make a list.

If you need color, almost all  scanners made today come with color capability. The same for ADF, the automatic document feeders to feed the paper to be scanned. 

If you need a flat bed, that is an important criteria on your list.

Determine what are the general sizes of your documents?? Very few scanners can scan larger than 8.5 x14" paper. Some can scan 11x17" paper through the ADF, but not many can scan 11x17 on the flatbed.  If you think about it, to have an 11x17 capability, you need two sets of 8.5x11 cameras to generate the "double" sized image, so expect a "double" sized cost.

Determine if your documents are single sided or double sided (printing on both sides of page) or mixed. If the are double sided or mixed, then you will want a "duplex" scanner.

You may have software that requires a certain type of scanner, or scanner drivers, such TWAIN, or ISIS so be sure to check your software requirements.

Determine if you need higher quality scans, or are going to need special processing such as bar codes or patch codes. These are important when scanning "batches" of individual documents

Service and support are critical in today's need it now world. Many scanners do not come with more than a 90 day warranty. The expectation is that you will purchase a service contract to care for and maintain your scanner.
